Saison 2020/21
In the snowstorm in Kiel, Bayern, as defending champions, sensationally lost in round two. Through Serge Gnabry and Leroy Sané, Munich took the lead twice, but the second division team equalized through Fin Bartels and Hauke Wahl – the score was 2-2 in the last minute of stoppage time. In the penalty shootout, all five Kiel players scored, FC Bayern’s fifth shooter became a tragic hero: Marc Roca failed because of goalkeeper Ioannis Gelios, then Bartels made everything clear.
Saison 2021/22
Under new coach Julian Nagelsmann – who missed the game due to a corona infection – Bayern experienced a historic end in Mönchengladbach. The 0:5 in the second round against an unleashed Borussia was Munich’s heaviest defeat in 276 cup games. After just two minutes, Manu Koné made it 0-1, Ramy Bensebaini made it 0-3 with a brace shortly afterwards, and only then did the Munich team get their first goal. After the half-time break, Breel Embolo also scored twice and the final score was reached after just 57 minutes. A debacle for FC Bayern.
Saison 2022/23
Shortly after coach Nagelsmann left, his successor Thomas Tuchel suffered his first painful defeat. In the quarter-finals, SC Freiburg visits Bayern – and wins away from Munich for the first time ever. Dayot Upamecano initially gave the record champions and record cup winners the lead after a corner, but Nicolas Höfler equalized with a fantastic left-footed shot. It remained a draw until injury time in the second half, when Jamal Musiala blocked another Höfler shot with his hands: a penalty. Lucas Höler aims to the left, goalkeeper Yann Sommer to the other corner: 1:2, final whistle, end.
Saison 2023/24
It is the big cup sensation of the season. 1. FC Saarbrücken is down 0-1 against Bayern in the first round after a goal from Thomas Müller, but the third division team is turning the game around at home. The decisive factor here is once again goals in stoppage time: Patrick Sontheimer scores in the 45+1. Minute to equalize, after the break the outsider fights passionately for his chance for the miracle. And is rewarded in minute 90+6: Marcel Gaus completes an outstanding counterattack to take the lead. Again 1:2, again in stoppage time.
Saison 2024/25
The double winner throws out the record winner, Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso remains undefeated in the fourth duel with FC Bayern. At the age of 38 and after more than 870 games as a professional, Manuel Neuer sees red for the first time because he badly misjudged a long ball from the Werkself and cleared Jeremie Frimpong, who had run through. Only 17 minutes have been played. As a result, the Munich team struggled in vain, while Leverkusen struck in the second half. Nathan Tella completed a perfect cross after 69 minutes for the only goal of the evening. It is the first serious defeat for new Bayern coach Vincent Kompany.
