“Theo and Maignan will be ready for Atalanta. Coppa Italia? I think we have a good chance of winning it”

AC Milan won 6-1 at the San Siro against Sassuolo. The head coach Paulo Fonseca revealed that he is satisfied with the result and said these words as well in a press conference after the final whistle:

“I felt the team was improving; we’ve worked on many aspects and improved a lot of things. Victories bring more confidence to the players. It’s a natural consequence of our work, of what the team is learning, and also an improvement in attitude. It’s important to note the seriousness of the team, playing with intensity. Today, it’s a mental growth for the team.”

On injury updates, what did Fonseca say?

“Theo wasn’t feeling well, so I decided not to play him. Maignan made an intervention, but they’ll be ready for Atalanta. They might even train tomorrow. With the comfortable lead, I wanted to take Rafa, Fofana, and Tijji off, but Loftus had a minor calf issue, and we decided not to risk him, especially since Sportiello had a knee issue. That’s why it was harder to manage the other players after halftime. I’ll have to hear from the doctor about Sportiello, but for Loftus, it’s nothing serious.”

On Rafael Leao’s goal as a center forward:

“It’s all thanks to Loftus and Rafa; they understood the moment. Leao timed his run and spacing perfectly, and Ruben provided a very beautiful assist. I’m pleased that Rafa scored again here at San Siro.”

On Tijjani Reijnders and his quality, Fonseca commented:

“I see him here at Milan continuing to do what he’s doing and improving further. Tijji is a player of great quality, and he can have a very successful career. He has the time and space to progress.”

Do you believe in the Coppa Italia?

“I believe in it a lot. The last time we won was in 2003, and I’d like to have the chance to reach the final. I think we have a good chance of winning it. The next match will be here at San Siro, then two games in the semifinals. We have the same opportunity as the other teams, but it’s a competition where we can achieve something important.”
