The Minister of National Education responds to the controversy over sex education. “I pilot this program, and the line of this program is the line of the ministry, there is no theory of gender in this program”underlined Anne Genetet, Thursday November 28, after criticism relayed by the Minister Delegate for Academic Success. Alexandre Portier estimated Wednesday before the Senate that the draft program was not “not acceptable” and had to be “reviewed”.
This program “is very clear”, “progressive”, “suitable for all ages” et “allows you to learn fundamental notions like respect, like consent, knowing how to say no, what a girl is, what a boy is”replied Anne Genetet. “Gender theory does not exist, nor does it exist in the program,” she insisted on the sidelines of a trip to Marcq-en-Baroeul (North), in the suburbs of Lille, on orientation.
“Gender theory” is the expression used by a conservative segment of society which is concerned about studies and teaching opening up a nuanced perception of differences between the sexes. The controversy over a so-called “gender theory” taught in French schools was virulent in 2014, driven by conservative movements close to opponents of homosexual marriage and sometimes the far right.
