For decades he was one of the most popular entertainers on German television. However, after his “Wetten, dass..?” exit, Thomas Gottschalk recently attracted more negative attention. He caused a stir with numerous statements – including about his treatment of women – in interviews. And in the joint podcast “Die Supernasen” with Mike Krüger, the 74-year-old repeatedly dished it out against colleagues.
His latest victim: Maite Kelly. When Gottschalk talked about his upcoming appearance on Florian Silbereisen’s ARD show “The Advent Festival of 100,000 Lights,” he teased: “I’ll probably have to push Maite Kelly aside so that people can see me.” Although the singer is a welcome guest on hit shows, she will not be taking part in the TV spectacle on November 30th. The comment, which apparently referred to Kelly’s figure, was subsequently met with heavy criticism.
The TV star couldn’t understand it. “It was undoubtedly a gag that came at Maite’s expense. “But she is aware of the fact that a gag always comes at someone’s expense,” he told “Bild” and was sure that the singer understood that. After all, she was old enough to have heard the saying “What loves itself, that “teases himself” to have heard, says Gottschalk.
However, his joke didn’t go down well. According to RTL, his podcast “Supernasen” with Mike Krüger will be discontinued at the end of the year.
“Such people only deserve my pity”
However, Maite Kelly sees it differently and shows little understanding. “Even as a child, I was smart enough to know that people who resort to such platitudes only deserve my pity,” the singer said clearly on “Bild”. Fortunately, she is equipped with “enough self-love that jokes at the expense of my figure have been the least of my concerns in my life,” says Maite Kelly.
But that’s not the case for everyone, “that’s why such degrading sentences, actions or gestures are unacceptable,” she emphasizes. Can she forgive Thomas Gottschalk for his tasteless joke? “I do not know that yet. “I need time for this,” the pop star made clear.
