A dramatic event shook Algeria this Wednesday, November 27, 2024 and alerted the global energy markets: a serious fire ravaged the Alrar gas processing unit, located in the Illizi region, in the early hours of this Wednesday. A fire of unprecedented magnitude
The flames, visible from several kilometers around, quickly consumed key installations at the Alrar field, thus paralyzing a crucial part of gas production. Rescue teams were urgently deployed, but their task is titanic. According to experts on site, it will be necessary several months to fully control the fire and restore normal operations.
A disastrous economic impact
Algeria, already facing economic and social challenges, sees its gas sector, pillar of the national economy (98% of Algeria’s revenue)seriously shaken by this catastrophe. With an estimated daily loss of more than $50 million, the impact on foreign exchange earnings and international gas delivery commitments could be devastating.
