Despite Ademola Lookman being the overwhelming favourite, Morrocan star Achraf Hakimi appears determined to create a Rodri-style upset at the upcoming CAF Awards.
The Paris Saint-Germain fullback, nominated for the 2024 CAF Player of the Year award, has expressed his pride and satisfaction with the recognition, while subtly fueling speculation of a potential surprise win.
Atalanta and Super Eagles forward Lookman is widely tipped as the frontrunner, particularly after an impressive season that saw him score 17 goals and provide 10 assists in 45 games, and finish 14th in the Ballon d’Or 2024 ranking.
He also played a crucial role in Nigeria’s journey to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations final, where he netted three times and earned a spot in the Team of the Tournament.
Hakimi relishes CAF POTY nomination, hopes to upstage Lookman
“It’s a source of pride and satisfaction, especially knowing that the work I’ve been doing for a long time will be rewarded with this nomination,” Hakimi told Brut via maliactu.net.
“It’s true that it’s an important trophy on an individual level, but I’m happy to be here.
“I hope I can win it, but if not, I’m happy to be here, and it makes me want to keep working”
Hakimi’s credentials are significant. His defensive solidity and attacking contributions helped PSG reach the UEFA Champions League semifinals last season, while on the international stage, he played a key role in Morocco’s 2024 Olympic bronze medal triumph.
The CAF Awards ceremony, scheduled for December 16, 2024, in Marrakech, will see Hakimi competing against other top African stars, including Nigeria’s Ademola Lookman, Guinea’s Serhou Guirassy, Ivory Coast’s Simon Adingra, and South Africa’s Ronwen Williams.
