Bertrand Badie, professor emeritus at Sciences Po and specialist in international relations, was the guest of the franceinfo Matinale, this November 27.
A ceasefire between Hezbollah and Israel came into force in Lebanon this Wednesday, November 27. From now on, the difficulty will be that the two belligerents manage to withdraw from the buffer zone around the border between Israel and Lebanon. “The main difficulty is even more prosaic, it is that the truce is not peace, it is a situation of freezing of fighting in asymmetrical conditions. Israel will be the judge of whether this truce is real or not”explains Bertrand Badie. According to him, “it is a familiar situation which is that of the balance of powers (…) it is extremely difficult to manage because (…) it will be extremely difficult to regain control of this process”details the guest, estimating that “withdrawal will take time.”
Bertrand Badie also raises the question of the future of the Lebanese army. “We must not forget that in the army there are a very large number of Shiite fighters. There is almost a continuum between this Shiite part and Hezbollah, that is another difficulty”he analyzes.
