Vincent Kompany himself did not go along with it, but it was a theme beforehand: could Bayern Munich finally win against PSG in a top match? Because although the Rekordmeister competes against the smaller teams this season, it just didn’t work against opponents of a slightly bigger stature. In particular, the 4-1 defeat on the Barcelona field continued to buzz around Bavaria a month after the date. Although the last six matches have been won without conceding a single goal, only a win against a (European) top club would erase the last doubts.
The match against Paris Saint-Germain was therefore an excellent opportunity for Bayern to take that victory. Because Kompany did not want to hear the statement that this PSG is the weakest PSG in years, but our compatriot cannot deny that the Parisians look less flashy on paper than in the recent past.
Bayern certainly started the game enthusiastically and quickly created a few chances. However, it could not be followed up afterwards. PSG coach Luis Enrique had done his homework well and had his team defend man-to-man, making it difficult for the Bavarian eleven to find the right solution for a long time. And if Bayern did manage to get away with it, the attacking quartet’s sights were not properly focused.
Bayern came away very well a little later when Zaire-Emery missed a huge chance. Neuer also had to save the day shortly afterwards. Yet, with halftime in sight, Bayern managed to break the spell: defender Kim Min-Jae took advantage of a corner kick from PSG goalkeeper Safonov’s injudicious release to head the 1-0 against the ropes.
Bayern then had complete control of the game and after less than an hour the game was actually in a decisive fold, when the Parisians had to continue with ten after a (slight) second yellow card for Dembele. Afterwards, Bayern looked for a redeeming second goal – Musiala hit the post – but although it never came, the Rekordmeister did not encounter any problems.
Now Dortmund and Leverkusen are waiting
And so Kompany achieved a deserved, rewarding and, above all, important victory. Not only is Bayern once again among the people thanks to this victory with 10 out of 15, but thanks to this victory against the Parisians, a first victory in a top match is no longer a theme. No unnecessary luxury with a league match against Dortmund and a cup match against Leverkusen in the offing. And PSG? They lag behind with 4 out of 15 in the Champions League and cannot afford to make any more mistakes in the next matches.
