Al-Ahly of Egypt began its campaign in the group stage of the African Champions League with a 4-2 victory over its guest, Abidjan Stadium, coming from Ivory Coast, on Tuesday.
Al-Ahly, the defending champion, won the first 3 points in the third group, before facing Orlando Pirates of South Africa against CS Belouizdad of Algeria.
The top two finishers in 4 groups qualify for the quarter-finals.
Mahmoud Abdel Moneim (Kahraba), Hussein El-Shahat, and Mohamed Magdy (Qafsha) took turns scoring the Al-Ahly quartet in the match.
Kahraba opened the scoring 14 minutes after the start, after receiving a cross pass from Qafsha and receiving the ball with a direct shot into the net.
Qafsha doubled Al-Ahly’s lead 7 minutes later after a pass from Taher Mohamed Taher, and Qafsha calmly shot into the goal from inside the area.
Al-Shahat increased Al-Ahly’s lead in the 26th minute, after a quick counterattack that ended with a pass from Kahraba, with which he prepared the ball for Al-Shahat, who had no difficulty in scoring.
Kasum Kone reduced the score for the visiting team four minutes later, using a cross pass from the right side to meet the ball with a perfect header into the net.
Kahraba scored Al-Ahly’s fourth goal 4 minutes after the end of the break, with a direct shot after a cross pass from Khaled Abdel Fattah.
Roger Assali scored Abidjan Stadium’s second goal in the 55th minute after a corner kick that was handled poorly by Al-Ahly’s defense, so Assali easily put the ball into the net.
Al-Ahly wasted many opportunities in the first half despite its complete dominance of the ball.
Abidjan Stadium’s offensive performance improved greatly in the second half, and it missed many opportunities, most notably Saint-Jean Coeur’s shot that hit the left post in the 66th minute.
