Despite his team’s three victories in as many outings, during the second window of the Fiba qualifiers for the 2025 men’s Afrobasket, the Lions coach, Desagana Diop, is angry with the authorities responsible for managing the sport.
At a press conference after the victory against Cameroon this Sunday, the Senegalese technician exposed certain problems during preparation. “I came to the national team thanks to Boniface Ndong and Makhtar Ndiaye. When I was a player, there were always these problems of bonuses, transport, among others. I know the efforts made by the federation which financed the course in August. I don’t have a problem, but I don’t accept certain things. There are players who received their tickets late; this is not normal. Some spent hours outside because we didn’t pay for the hotel. They stayed from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. waiting for the problem to be resolved,” he regrets.
Desagana Diop even threatened to leave the Lions bench if the authorities are not ready to finance the campaigns of the national basketball team.
“The players received their tickets late. Some received them the day before their trip. Clubs request this document for their planning. I was supposed to travel with Amadou Mbodj, but we went all over the place to get there. We are not a neighborhood team. We can no longer continue with these light actions. I didn’t want to talk about that before the competition. We want to prepare for Afrobasket in Europe, but if we cannot finance this camp, I am not going to coach the team,” he warns.
