What passengers can expect by 2027

Airport boss Lukas Brosi outlines visions and goals for Zurich Airport, reflects on the past and also criticizes the company.

The 2024/25 winter flight schedule has been running at Zurich Airport for around a month – with 53 airlines flying to 169 destinations. Almost at the same time, the ZRH also started the second half of the renovation phase of the baggage conveyor belts in Check-in 1. This means some check-in locations will be moved. Now the airport’s CEO has reflected on the last few years and looked to the coming years, announcing his priorities, as can be seen from abouttravel.

The most important thing in brief

  • The airport boss is mostly satisfied with the year 2024, which has not yet been completed
  • A sticking point, however, is the lack of punctuality
  • Various infrastructure projects are planned for the future

Crucial point: punctuality

A lot has happened at Zurich Airport in 2024. Switzerland’s largest airport welcomed the first CT scanners, presented the new baggage sorting system and in September ZRH broke the passenger record again with almost three million passengers. And the airport was also able to enjoy a political success: the runway extension was approved by 62 percent of Zurich voters. This was much to the delight of airport boss Lukas Brosi. But not everything went smoothly. Like many other companies, the airport was affected by the global IT disruption in July.

And there is still room for improvement when it comes to punctuality. In view of this, Zurich Airport is relying on new technologies such as cameras at dock stands to make handling processes more efficient. In addition, additional measures such as the unbundling of flight routes and the exclusion of slow-flying aircraft are being used to further optimize operations.

The delays are currently too high.

With regard to waiting times at check-in and at security control, the airport manager draws a positive conclusion for the past year. While he said in mid-2023 that Zurich Airport should become faster, he is now talking about an improvement in quality.

Ambitious plans in Kloten

The airport boss is confident and ambitious about the coming years. He lists everything that is planned until 2027:

  • Extension of slopes 28 and 32
  • The new Dock A
  • Modernization of the Skymetro
  • Modernization of passenger areas: From autumn 2027, the ZRH wants to offer new catering options and optimized passenger routes
  • Sustainability initiatives: Projects such as electrifying the vehicle fleet and optimizing waste management are intended to help improve the airport’s environmental footprint
