In what could be called the most-remarkable marketing strategy of the recent times, the Sardinian village of Ollolai in Italy is capitalising on Donald Trump’s presidential re-election by launching a campaign to attract disenchanted American expats, according to a report by CNN.

Long plagued by depopulation, the picturesque village has been selling dilapidated homes for as little as €1 (just over $1) to revitalise its community.

Following the November 5 election outcome, Ollolai released a website specifically targeting Americans, promising them “a European escape in the stunning paradise of Sardinia,” according to a report by CNN. Mayor Francesco Columbu believes Americans are key to reviving the village, offering them a “fast-track” process for securing homes.

The initiative includes three tiers of housing options:
1. Free temporary housing for select digital nomads.
2. €1 homes requiring renovation.
3. Ready-to-occupy homes priced up to €100,000 ($105,000).

Ollolai’s population has dwindled from 2,250 to just 1,150 over the past century, and the mayor hopes this push will reverse the decline, according to a report by CNN. Columbu revealed the website targeting Americans has received 38,000 inquiries, mostly from the US, since its launch.

Festive offer

While the campaign prioritises Americans, Columbu insists it welcomes applications from other nationalities. He noted the town is betting on Americans as its “winning card” for economic and social revitalisation.
