The decision by US President Joe Biden's administration to authorize Ukraine to use US-supplied weapons to strike deep into Russian territory is “good”, President Emmanuel Macron said on Monday, citing a ” profound change”, attributed to Russia, in the conflict.
Citing three sources familiar with the matter, Reuters reported on Sunday that Washington has lifted restrictions that had until now prevented Kyiv from using American weapons to strike Russian territory.
The Biden administration has neither confirmed nor denied this information, the spokesperson for the US State Department, Matthew Miller, contenting himself on Monday with reiterating that the United States will “always adapt and adjust the capabilities provided to the Ukraine when appropriate.”
According to the sources – American representatives speaking on condition of anonymity – Washington took this decision in response to the deployment of North Korean soldiers alongside Russian troops, seen as an escalation of the conflict by Moscow.
Emmanuel Macron highlighted Monday that the United States' decision, which he described as a “good decision”, was “triggered by a profound change in this conflict, which should not be neglected: the commitment of North-North soldiers. Koreans.”
“Russia has taken an escalatory decision, by involving North Korea on its side,” he told journalists in Rio de Janeiro on the sidelines of the G20 summit in which he is participating.
Recalling that he had insisted last February during a summit in Paris on the need to help Ukraine resist the Russian invasion, the French president added that the priority was to achieve “lasting peace” .
