A few years ago, wild pigs remained in the forests or in the countryside, where oaks and their acorns and ears of corn, which are the basis of their diet, proliferate. But today, with deforestation and lower grain yields, wild boars are coming look for food near towns. Families of wild boars were recently seen in the Saint-Cybard district of Angoulême. Damage is reported, no longer in agricultural plots, but in gardens in La Couronne, Voeuil and Giget, Puymoyen, Vars or Marsac in the Charente valley. Also in Champniers, where the wild boars have settled at the foot of the Montagnes commercial area, at the bottom of the karting circuit, or in the wooded areas around the ring road, the D 1000.
“This is the first year we've seen this. We've been here for four years, I've never seen this. And it worries me a little” (Daniel KOEHLER, resident of Champniers)
The Charente Hunting Federation has set up a wild boar regulation plan. But hunters cannot come with their rifles to urban areas. These are wolf scouts, wildlife specialists, who can collect wild boars during hunts imposed by the Charente Prefecture. With the FNSEA, Charente hunters are experimenting with a system that has already proven itself in the Landes: the trap net. Corn cobs are placed under the 10 by 10 meter net, to attract the wild boars, and the net is gradually lowered until it captures the wild boars. The system is currently in experimentation in two secret locations in the south of the department.
To limit the increasing presence of wild boars in urban areas, the Prefecture of Charente is considering searches in the future. Nothing has yet been decided, but the Territorial Directorate has proposed relaunching discussions with local authorities. We do not yet know in which sectors. In February 2016, an administrative battle along the Nationale 10 took place between the Girac roundabout and the Basseau interchange.
