Due to the gusty winds forecasted, a High Wind Warning is in effect for portions of the Outer Banks including Duck, Kill Devil Hills, Kitty Hawk, Manteo, Nags Head, and Southern Shores. A Wind Advisory is also in effect for coastal Carteret, Dare, Hyde County, and inland Tyrrell County through 4 PM Friday. Isolated power outages are possible and blowing trees could result in travel difficulties along Highway 12 and 17.

As the abnormally dry streak has been in place for several weeks across Eastern North Carolina, so we will finally put a dent in that today. Showers arrive mid to late this afternoon and evening, giving the area a healthy 1-2″ of rain to fill the rain gauge. Some of them could fall heavy at times, especially along the coast where areas along the Outer Banks could see overwash, thanks to the King Tide in place this week. Minus the rain, the winds will be noticeable, as they’ll be out of the northwest from 15-30 mph. We could see gusts in some spots possibly reaching 40-55 mph. Friday will feature a wet and windy start, then becoming partly cloudy in the afternoon, with breezes continuing across the area. With high temperatures in the upper 50s to lower 60s, the feels-like temperature will be in the mid to upper 50s. Overnight lows remain in the 40s. The rain will end this weekend, as we will be left mostly to partly sunny skies. Winds will continue through Saturday before relaxing later into the night and Sunday morning, as they will be out of the north from 10-20 mph, with gusts approaching 25-30 mph. Temperatures will be in the mid-60s in the afternoon and lows in the mid-40s.

Calmer and quiet conditions will set up next week, thanks to high pressure being large and in charge, allowing for mostly sunny skies. The mercury will jump back in the lower 70s, with overnight lows in the 50s. Our next chance of rain could arrive later in the week but does not look like heavy rain or gusty winds at this time.
