A weak northerly foehn current caused a so-called lee wave on the southern side of the Alps. Part of it could be seen from Valais as “altocumulus lenticularis dublicatus”.
How do lenticular clouds get their typical shape?
When wind blows over a mountain, the air is deflected. This causes waves to form. In the area where the current rises, cooling occurs and cloud droplets form. There is less room for water vapor in cooler air than in warmer air. Where the air sinks slightly again, it warms up and the cloud disperses again. What’s exciting is that the air moves with the wind, but the cloud always stays in the same place. It is constantly being re-formed and dissolves again on the way to the wave trough. These lenticular clouds typically occur during foehn conditions; they are also called foehn fish.
A special form of the lenticular cloud
If several lenticularis clouds appear on top of each other, they are called “Altocumulus lenticularis duplicatus”. On Sunday evening there were several of these particularly powerful lenticular clouds, which are strongly reminiscent of UFOs.
