The new Miss Universe comes from Denmark and is called Victoria Kjær Theilvig. At the 73rd edition of the beauty pageant in Mexico City, the 21-year-old was chosen from a total of 127 applicants.
The tiara was placed on her head by her predecessor Sheynnis Palacios from Nicaragua. Chidimma Adetshina of Nigeria took second place, while Maria Fernanda Beltran of Mexico was named third place.
When asked after the freestyle what she would like to say to the audience, Theilvig urged the audience to “keep fighting… no matter where you come from”: “I’m standing here today because I want a change, I want to make history, And that’s exactly what I’m doing tonight,” she said.
Suchata Chuangsri from Thailand and Ileana Marquez Pedroza from Venezuela followed in second place. Pedroza, a 28-year-old mother, made it into the top five after the competition lifted some restrictions in recent years.
For the first time there was no maximum age limit for participation after this was lifted by the organizers. Previously, only women between the ages of 18 and 28 were allowed to compete for the beauty crown. The oldest competitor in the Arena Ciudad de México was Cameroon-born Miss Malta, Beatrice Njoya, who is 40 years old and has three children.
