During a match in Amsterdam, a medical emergency occurred when former Bundesliga professional Adam Szalai collapsed on the sideline.

The co-coach of Hungary, Adam Szalai, collapsed during the match in Amsterdam. Numerous well-wishes for recovery have also been sent from Germany.

Following the collapse of the former Bundesliga player, many recovery messages have come from his former adopted home. “I was naturally shocked at first. I hope he is doing okay and that nothing serious has happened,” said Szalai’s former teammate after Germany’s 7-0 victory against Bosnia-Herzegovina in Freiburg. The national goalkeeper played several years alongside the 36-year-old at TSG Hoffenheim. “The most important thing we have is our health.”

Szalai, who is now the co-coach of the Hungarian national team, took to social media just hours after the medical emergency: “Thank you for the many messages; I am doing well,” read the message posted shortly before midnight on his personal Instagram account, accompanied by a red heart. The Hungarian Association also shared Szalai’s message via X, which he had posted verbatim on Facebook.

“I hope he gets back on his feet first. Then, we hope to have a good game, and Adam will hopefully be back with us,” said Germany’s national coach. At that time, Szalai had not yet made a statement. “I first hope that he is okay. He is a former player of mine, with whom I have a very good relationship,” said Nagelsmann. The Hungarians are set to host the German team next Tuesday.

Szalai collapsed early in the Nations League match against the Netherlands (0-4) on the sideline. Hungarian media reported that the 36-year-old had to be resuscitated. The national association stated during the first half that Szalai was in a stable condition and had been taken to a hospital in Amsterdam for examination. The match at the Johan Cruijff Arena resumed after the emergency situation had been addressed, approximately twelve minutes later.

“The most important thing in this case is not the result but that a former player, a staff member of the Hungarian national team, is feeling better again. We all wish him a speedy recovery,” said Lothar Matthäus on RTL. The German record national player had himself coached the Hungarian national team in 28 matches in 2004 and 2005.

Szalai, who has played 276 Bundesliga matches for Mainz, Hoffenheim, Schalke, and Hannover, last played for Hungary two years ago, initially as captain. His former clubs also sent wishes for recovery through the X platform.

In the summer of 2023, Szalai retired from his active playing career. He made his debut as co-coach of the Hungarian national team in the first leg against the Netherlands in October.
