France-Israel, a match under close surveillance
A rather calm evening, despite a few small incidents at the margins. The substantial security system (4,000 police officers and gendarmes) deployed for the occasion enabled the smooth running of the match between France and Israel on Thursday, November 14. Placed under very close surveillance, the meeting took place “very well done from a security point of view”declared Paris police chief Laurent Nuñez. No major disturbances were reported around the stadium, neither when the supporters arrived, nor during the 90 minutes of play, nor after the final whistle.
An incident in the stands, which lasted a few seconds, was nevertheless noted. “There was a fight that broke out, which was immediately contained by the stewards“, explained Laurent Nuñez. This clash followed “attitudes felt as provocations”a police source told AFP. Two people were arrested for these facts, one immediately, and the other subsequently, thanks to surveillance videos.
In total, 40 people were arrested Thursday evening, including 38 on the sidelines of the match, said a police source. “We have a total of 29 police custody cases, including the two for acts of violence between supporters”specified, for its part, the Bobigny public prosecutor’s office. Most of the individuals concerned were arrested for common law reasons (carrying a weapon, possession of drugs, receiving stolen goods). However, five of these measures were taken “for acts of incitement to hatred or violence in a sports venue”detailed the prosecution.
