This Friday, November 15 evening, many French people will have their eyes glued to a particularly illuminated sky. And for good reason: the super “beaver” moon will rear its head. The Earth's natural satellite will then appear larger and brighter than normal. The super moon will be visible in particular at 10:28 p.m. According to the astronomy specialist site StarWalk, a super moon “appears 7% larger and about 16% brighter than an average full moon”. “To the naked eye, the difference is very subtle, if not invisible”précise StarWalk.
This Friday, November 15, is a good opportunity to take advantage of this super moon, since it will be the last of the year 2024. The next so-called “cold” full moon, which is not considered a super moon, can be observed on December 15. And to see the super moon again «castor»you will have to wait until November 24… 2026.
Why is it called the super “beaver” moon?
To be able to differentiate them, all full moons have a nickname. Native Americans “used to give names to full moons according to the particular characteristics of each month”explains StarWalk. The nickname of «castor» is therefore nothing trivial.
Two hypotheses exist on the origin of this name: in November, this animal actively prepares for the arrival of winter cold by building dams or stockpiling food. The other possible origin of this nickname is that the month of November is the period during which hunters set beaver traps to collect their fur.
