Environmentalist senator Yannick Jadot launched a petition against the Mercosur. Signed by more than 600 parliamentarians, it is addressed to the President of the European Commission and denounces this trade agreement with South America which will be discussed at the G20 in Rio on November 18.

Producing ever more beef and soy in Brazil and Argentina means destroying the Amazon; the climate challenge is enormous. Breeding in Brazil is done with hormones, antibiotics, pesticides banned in Europe. We need, for the climate, for agriculture, to say no to this free trade agreement.”
Within Europe, Will France's voice count against this desire for agreement? “There is a commercial part and a political part, explains Yannick Jadot. The agreement must be submitted to the validation of all national Parliaments. The Commission wishes divide this agreement so that it is voted on by a majority between the EU countries, that's why I spoke to Ursula von der Leyen with 600 parliamentarians”.
“The Commission, he continues, must understand that we cannot, in the face of opposition from a significant part of public opinion in Europe and from a large country like France, validate an agreement simply so that the Germans can sell more cars to Brazil!”
Yannick Jadot warns the President of the Commission of the political repercussions that the signing of this free trade agreement could have. “If Europe validates this agreement against France, she gives an extraordinary gift to the National Rally and the far right, he assures, since she will ultimately say that French democracy is useless. It will be like the European constitutional treaty of 2005, that is to say Europe against French democracy. We will mobilize so that, earlier in December, at the Mercosur summit, this agreement is not adopted.”
