The third and final match of the group phase of the Turin 2024 Masters will see Australian Alex De Minaur and American Taylor Fritz battle it out this Thursday for a place in the semi-finals.
Taylor Fritz will have his fate in his own hands in this final match of the ATP Finals group phase. Winner of his first match on Sunday against Russia’s Daniil Medvedev, the American had made a good start against a direct semi-final opponent. However, the last US Open finalist was once again beaten by world number 1 Jannik Sinner in his second match of the week in Italy. A two-set defeat, however, does not jeopardize his chances of qualifying for the last four, where victory, whatever the score, will be imperative against Alex De Minaur on Thursday afternoon in Turin.
The situation prior to this match was very different for the Australian. Beaten by Jannik Sinner on his ATP Finals debut on Sunday, the world No. 9 was unable to turn things around in his second match, falling to Russia’s Daniil Medvedev. Despite losing his first two matches without winning a set, Alex De Minaur still has a slim chance of reaching the semi-finals in his first appearance at the Masters. To do so, he’ll need to beat Taylor Fritz and hope for a 2-set defeat of Daniil Medvedev in the evening’s other match. Calculations will then come into play to decide between the 3 tied players, but before anything else, Alex De Minaur will have to beat his opponent of the day to hope for a miracle.
