By 2050, CVA (Cerebral Vascular Accident) could become one of the main causes of death in the world, with projections of almost 10 million deaths annually. In a recent study published by The Lancet Neurology, researchers highlight a 70% increase in stroke cases globally between 1990 and 2021, totaling 11.9 million new records. This growth was attributed to modifiable risk factors, such as high body mass index (BMI), high blood pressure and poor eating habits. Furthermore, global warming stood out as an aggravating factor, increasing the risk of poor health and premature death from stroke by 72%.
The research also points out that the lack of effective prevention and the predominance of avoidable factors, such as a sedentary lifestyle and excessive sugar consumption, are major challenges in controlling stroke. The forecast is that, in low- and middle-income countries, the impact will be even more severe, requiring public health policies and preventive measures to reduce cases and save lives.
