This Tuesday, November 12, the department was placed on yellow thunderstorm and rain-flood alert by Météo-France. The west and north of Var, as well as the Toulon region, were affected by fairly heavy rainfall.
After a sunny Armistice Day, the rain returned to the Var. The department faced a rainy episode on Tuesday, November 12, a rather classic phenomenon for the month of November.
Météo-France has initiated yellow thunderstorm and rain-flood vigilance from 7 a.m. until mid-afternoon, calling on residents to be cautious.
The rain prevailed in western Var, in the north of the department and in the Toulon region. Up to 60mm of rain was recorded in Porquerolles and 58.8mm in Hyères, including 16.7mm at midday. 34.9 mm of precipitation was also recorded in Toulon, including 24.3 mm at 8 a.m.
The risk of another Mediterranean episode?
These sudden bad weather conditions were, however, less intense than the Mediterranean episode that occurred at the end of October.
“What differs is that the disturbance came from the North-East, while the Mediterranean episodes come from the South, so it is not the same scale and it is not the same degree of instability,” explains Yohan Laurito, meteorologist for Météo Varoise, at BFM Toulon Var.
According to the specialist, it is not excluded that another Mediterranean episode could occur during the month of November, or even December.
“Given what we have, it seems that the end of the weekend will be disrupted again by the Mediterranean, and there we will again monitor the Mediterranean risks, but it is still a little far away,” adds Yohan Laurito.
While waiting for the possible return of rain, vigilance has returned to green for the Var department. Dry and sunny weather is also forecast for Wednesday.
