Netflix's subscription with ads is attracting more and more people, with the streaming service announcing that it will have 70 million users in November 2024. In comparison, there were 40 million in May and 22 million in January. The progress in just a few months is quite notable.
More than 50% of new subscribers opt for Netflix's ad-supported subscription in countries where it is available. The company says it is seeing “steady progress” in the 12 countries where the offer is available. France is one of the countries where it is available, the price is €5.99/month.
Netflix plans to make advertising a major source of revenue in addition to subscriptions, but its advertising business remains modest compared to its competitors. For years, the company positioned itself as an alternative to ad-supported TV and only introduced commercials when it lost customers in 2022.
Netflix priced its ad-supported plan as a lower-cost alternative for budget-conscious users, a tactic that has produced steady growth. As of May, the company had 40 million monthly active users in the subscription with ads. It ended the third quarter with a total of 282.7 million subscribers.
At Amazon Prime Video, ads have been in place for everyone for a few months. You have to pay extra each month to withdraw them. On the Disney+ side, there are subscriptions with and without advertisements.
