The coach of Sp. Braga, Carlos Carvalhal, considers that his team’s short rest time was decisive for the final result (4-2) in Alvalade.

“We played on Thursday, we went on a trip, Sporting played on Tuesday. I know that doesn’t matter at all, but it makes a difference. We played with five attackers because we knew our team would have physical difficulties. We bet on a strong start. We managed to come out ahead , Matheus was practically unmolested despite Sporting’s greater possession of the ball.

In the second half there was no intention of falling, it is the result of Sporting’s ability and our team’s physical incapacity. The first goal is from a corner and then there are two shots outside the box. Before that, Matheus makes a defense. And it’s over. Great effectiveness from Sporting.

We really wanted to reach the opponent’s goal, but Sporting were fresher. They knew we could exploit the transition, but the fast players they put in made it difficult. Our plan came to fruition, to get an advantage and then, with our energy, try to hold off Sporting. Until a certain point we managed. It wasn’t for lack of will. The players did what they had to do and I congratulate them. They interpreted what they had to do very well, but they are human. In less than 70 hours they have to play against a team like Sporting. I have to congratulate them and appeal to people for understanding.

Is it frustrating to concede goals like that?
“It’s life, it’s football. We don’t play against just any team. We play in a complicated context, imagine if it were the other way around. But we’re talking about 70 hours. A game on Tuesday, another on Thursday and then playing on Sunday. We try to do the best.

Line of three centers

“I don’t think there were any weaknesses, maybe occasional errors, expulsions too. It’s been atypical at this level. I was satisfied with the team’s behavior. Changing the two midfielders? We could have changed. But we were holding the game well. Vitor is very good on the ball stop and Moutinho is the one who best interprets the closing of spaces to change.

We did well against an opponent who has made life difficult for everyone. Under normal circumstances, perhaps we could have won the game.”

Exhibitions by João Ferreira and Ricardo Horta
“Matheus makes a save and scores the goals, he didn’t have much work. He had a bit of a thankless night. The team did well. Roger, Gabri, the three defenders, the midfielders, Ricardo was at his good level, Bruma, Amine Whoever came in also helped and completed it.

What I said to Ruben Amorim
“I congratulated him on the excellent work he did at Sporting and wished him all the best for what’s to come.”

Sporting defeated Sp. Braga, 4-2, after being 2-0 down.
