Just 48 hours after creating history and becoming the first Indian player in history to score back-to-back T20I tons, Sanju Samson registered an embarrasing record on Sunday during the 2nd T20I between India and South Africa at the St. George Park in Gqeberha on Sunday (November 10).

After South Africa won the toss and chose to bowl first, Samson’s pursuit of a world record third consecutive century was a short-lived one after he was dismissed for a duck after facing just three balls. Marco Jansen rattled the stumps of the 29-year-old.

Samson’s departure was the start of a disastrous start for India as Abhishek Sharma departed in the second over after making just four runs. Later, skipper Suryakumar Yadav failed to make a mark after being dismissed for a nine-ball four resulting in the Men in Blue losing three wickets in the powerplay.

After his duck against South Africa, Samson has become the first Indian player to register four ducks in a calendar year in the shortest format of the game. The Rajasthan Royals (skipper) previously departed without troubling the scorers in the 3rd T20I against Afghanistan in January at Bengaluru. Later, he was dismissed for ducks in back-to-back matches against Sri Lanka at Pallekele in July.

After being out of the side, Samson has finally got a regular run in the Indian team in 2024. He was part of the 2024 T20 World Cup-winning squad but did not play a single match as Rishabh Pant got the nod as the first-choice wicketkeeper batter.

Samson has played 10 of India’s last 11 T20Is and opened the batting in each of the last five. Overall, the 29-year-old has played 11 matches this year and made 327 runs at an average of 36.33 and strike rate of 177.71.
