Vincent Kompany became a star at Hamburger SV. Now he is returning to his old homeland as a coach with FC Bayern.

Munich – Shortly before the end, Vincent Kompany caused a laugh. “Does the young boy have a question?” the coach wanted to know at the press conference that had actually already ended on Friday morning. What was meant was a child intern from “Sky” who was allowed to go to the press room on Säbener Straße as an observer. Kompany answered his remarkably routine question about Leroy Sané's form with a smile and casually referred to the strong form of his wingers – you could literally tell the coach was in a good mood before the away game against St. Pauli on Saturday (3:30 p.m. Sky).

There are currently more than enough reasons for this: with a win against the Kiezkicker, FCB could now extend its lead at the top of the table to six points. Even if Leipzig wins the evening game against Gladbach, the record champions will go into the international break as league leaders. And for Kompany himself it will be a return to his old homeland for the away game in Hamburg – the Belgian played for HSV from 2006 to 2008.

Did Kompany also visit the Reeperbahn during his time in Hamburg?

“The time was very important, beautiful. “Munich is a great city, and so is Hamburg,” he enthused about his two years on the Elbe. “I learned a lot there. That was the tough school with Stevens and Doll (Huub Stevens and Thomas Doll each coached HSV, editor's note).” As a 20-year-old central defender, Kompany moved from Anderlecht to HSV and made the jump to the international level there Top class. However, he did not want to reveal whether the coach also visited the Reeperbahn in addition to this phase of sporting development. “Even the Beatles were on the Reeperbahn. “I won’t say anything more,” he replied with a smile. Sports director Christoph Freund also praised St. Pauli for its unconventional style.

“This is an emotional club, they are doing the Bundesliga really well,” said the Austrian. “It’s a slightly different club and very special, I think that’s good. They played almost the best football last year.” The record champions have to be prepared for a highly motivated newcomer who wants to trip up Munich in the style of the “World Cup winners” from 2002.

Ex-HSV star Vincent Kompany on the rivalry with St. Pauli

Kompany doesn't lack sufficient motivation either. Although he never played against the neighborhood club during his playing days, the coach is still aware of the rivalry between his old club and FCB's upcoming opponents. “During my time, St. Pauli was in the second division. I know the rivalry has always been strong. “But it’s about Bayern and hopefully we can perform and get the result,” said the coach. “I still have a lot of friends in Hamburg, it might be important for them.”

With the exception of the long-term injured players, all players are fit and the Kompany team will give it their all before the international break. There’s even a chance of a Bundesliga record. No team has ever scored at least three goals in six away games in a row. After five goal festivals so far, FCB could set a new record with the next offensive gala against St. Pauli.
