Daniil Medvedev has qualified for the year end finals for the sixth consecutive season and will be looking to finish off his season with a big win.
Medvedev has had another solid season on the ATP Tour, but has so far failed to win a title for the first time since 2017.
The Russian reached his sixth Grand Slam final earlier this year, when Medvedev lost to Jannik Sinner in the Australian Open final.
He then fell to another top young star at Indian Wells where Carlos Alcaraz beat Medvedev to take home the title.
There were some more strong results at the Major tournaments however, as Medvedev reached the semi-finals of Wimbledon for the second consecutive season, eventually losing to Alcaraz in four sets.
His results in 2024 were more than enough to see Medvedev join the ATP Finals field, a field with a very notable absentee.
Daniil Medvedev says that ATP Finals stars will ‘all miss’ Novak Djokovic
Novak Djokovic withdrew from the ATP Finals last week, saying that he is dealing with an ongoing injury that has ended his 2024 season.
The Serb’s withdrawal makes this year’s tournament the first not to feature any member of the ‘big three’, (Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, or Roger Federer) since 2001.
Instead, Medvedev will be joined in Turin by Sinner, Alcaraz, Alexander Zverev, Taylor Fritz, Casper Ruud, Alex de Minaur and Andrey Rublev.
Speaking in the Ilie Nastase Group press conference, Medvedev gave his thoughts on none of the ‘big three’ taking part in Turin.
“No, I think we all miss them,” he said.
“Novak [Djokovic] could have played, so I would say that’s an even crazier statistic, because that’s 24 years in a row which he could have been part of the big three.
The 28-year-old did however see the potential upside of the 24-time Grand Slam champion skipping the event.
“It’s also good to not have him here, from one side of view,” said Medvedev.
“All new people, he [Djokovic] won here last year, so there’s going to be a new winner for sure.
“Let’s see who is going to make it.”
Who won the last ATP Finals without Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer?
The 2001 ‘Tennis Masters Cup’ now known as the ATP Finals, was the last time that we saw a field that didn’t include one of Djokovic, Nadal or Federer.
The field saw a number of names take part that many younger fans won’t recognise.
Seed | Name | Performance |
1 | Gustavo Kuerten | RR |
2 | Lleyton Hewitt | W |
3 | Andre Agassi | RR |
4 | Juan Carlos Ferrero | SF |
5 | Yevgeny Kefelnikov | SF |
6 | Patrick Rafter | RR |
7 | Sebastian Grosjean | F |
8 | Goran Ivanisevic | RR |
Lleyton Hewitt took home the title in Sydney, competing against a field that still play a big role in tennis in 2024.
Hewitt beat Sebastian Grosjean 6-3, 6-3, 6-4 in the final, the man who currently coaches top 20 ATP star Arthur Fils.
Another of 2024’s biggest names Alcaraz, had his coach compete back in 2001, as Juan Carlos Ferrero reached the semi-finals, just as the 21-year-old did last year.
Elena Rybakina’s new coach Goran Ivanisevic, also took part, falling at the group stage after winning Wimbledon earlier in the year.
It remains to be seen who will win in Turin this year, but with Djokovic missing out, Medvedev will be certainly hoping that he can pick up his first title of 2024.
