Dávid Hancko knows that Feyenoord could have done well on Wednesday evening to reach the knockout phase of the Champions League. Things turned out differently against Red Bull Salzburg: 1-3. “But we still have everything in our own hands,” said the defender, who also commented on the difficult series of the Rotterdam team.
‘It wasn’t a good one performance from us,” the 26-year-old Slovakian began at the press conference. ‘Of course we wanted to win, but we didn’t succeed. We have to blame ourselves, because we made mistakes. Yes, Salzburg played well and they made it difficult for us. They deserved to win, but if we had done better, we could have won here.’
The defender realized that it was a missed opportunity: ‘We could have taken a big step today. But we still have everything in our own hands. We tried, but it wasn’t good enough today. It was a total off day. We created too little and the build-up was too slow.’
The common denominator of all reactions after the Rotterdam defeat? Feyenoord that was too weak. Hanko also saw that. ‘It is a much-discussed topic of course; many competitions. I feel it too. I try to do everything I can to recover every time. But it’s November 6 and I’ve already played twenty games. It would help if some boys came back from injuries.’
Hancko speaks out about a full calendar
Feyenoord captain Quinten Timber indicated that he was still suffering from an injury, while Priske said that he replaced Jordan Lotomba and Ibrahim Osman at half-time due to injuries. Furthermore, the Rotterdam team was already missing Justin Bijlow, Quilindschy Hartman, Calvin Stengs, Ayase Ueda, Santiago Gimenez and Julian Carranza due to injuries.
