Benfica ultras cause delays with flares in the Munich subway, start of game postponed by Bayern

In a surprising turn of events, the UEFA Champions League match between Bayern Munich and Benfica was delayed due to the actions of the Benfica ultras. The Portuguese team’s supporters lit flares in the Munich subway, causing significant disruption to the city’s public transport network. Trains had to stop, causing significant traffic jams on the platforms of various stations near the Allianz Arena and preventing many fans from getting to matchday four of the Champions League in time. As a result, UEFA decided to postpone kick-off, which eventually began at 9:17 p.m. CET.

The game was originally scheduled for 9pm CET, but European football’s governing body had no choice but to postpone it. UEFA announced a 15-minute delay and the game began at 9:17 p.m. CET after subway problems were resolved, allowing the majority of fans to travel to the stadium.

The Munich subway was severely affected by the incidents triggered by the ultras from Lisbon, who lit flares not only in the facilities but also in one of the trains. The train had to be stopped due to smoke filling the carriage, causing a complete halt in activity at nearby stations, particularly Frottmaning, the station closest to the stadium.

The disruption in the Munich subway led to overcrowded platforms at the affected stations, causing significant chaos that ultimately affected the Champions League match. The absence of thousands of fans in the stands just minutes before the start of the match was evident, compounded by the long queues to gain access to the stadium due to subway delays.

As a result, UEFA determined that the match had to start later. Duel has been postponed to 9:15 p.m. CET, which was the original kick-off time. It started, without any further problems, two minutes later than planned, after the usual formation of the players in the middle of the pitch and an emotional minute’s silence for the victims of the floods in Valencia.
