Instead of the usual 9 p.m., the German record champions' game against the Portuguese started with a delay. Reason: traffic problems in Munich.
Unusual scenes in the Bavarian capital: The Champions League game between FC Bayern and Benfica Lisbon on Wednesday evening began with a delay of over a quarter of an hour at 9:17 p.m. (in the live ticker on t-online). The reason for the delay was disruptions in the Munich subway system on the route from the city center to the Allianz Arena in the Fröttmaning district (U6).
Around ten minutes before the actual start of the game, the spectators already present in the stadium were informed about the problems. The reaction from the stands: whistles, but also applause. After all, there were still “thousands of fans” on the way to the arena at this point, as Bayern’s stadium spokesman Stephan Lehmann reported. Delays are also to be expected after the final whistle.
The problems in Munich's local transport had been announced: Bayern informed about X around an hour before kick-off. “Due to a signal box malfunction, there are currently delays in subway traffic towards the stadium/Fröttmaning. Stadium visitors are therefore asked to use other means of transport if possible,” it said in a tweet. Drivers on the way to the stadium were also stuck in traffic for a long time.
But the difficulties went beyond that. There were also problems at the Marienplatz and Odeonsplatz stations in downtown Munich. A fire brigade operation was necessary, apparently because fans had set off pyrotechnics. This caused a fire in a compartment of a train.
