Trump will be the next US President. Restrained congratulations come from some countries – including France and Germany. In Israel, however, there is great joy. Positive reactions also come from Russia.
Donald Trump’s return to the White House is certain. While the last votes are still being counted, heads of state and government around the world congratulate the 78-year-old.
For some, the Republican’s success is causing concern – and the initial messages are correspondingly cautious. Other countries, however, have high hopes for Trump’s continued term in office. An overview.
Germany – Cooperation for “Prosperity and Freedom”
Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz congratulated Donald Trump on Platform X. In his message to the new US President, the SPD politician emphasized the long-standing close cooperation between the two countries.
According to government spokesman Steffen Hebestreit, Scholz had previously spoken on the phone with French President Emmanuel Macron. The two have therefore agreed on close cooperation. They wanted to protect their interests and values and at the same time cooperate with the USA.
Federal Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock also emphasized that the federal government is committed to a close transatlantic relationship regardless of parties. “Germany will also be a close, reliable ally for the future American government.” The following applies: “As in any good partnership: Where there are undoubtedly political differences, an honest and, above all, intensive exchange is more important than ever.”
France – Cooperation “with respect”
French President Macron also assured his willingness to work together – “with your and my convictions. With respect and ambition. For more peace and prosperity,” Macron wrote on X.
Great Britain – “special relationship”
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer referred to the “special relationship” between Great Britain and the USA and expressed the hope for continued good cooperation. “As closest allies, we stand side by side in defending our shared values of freedom, democracy and entrepreneurship.”
Hungary – “beautiful victory”
The Hungarian Prime Minister and Trump supporter Viktor Orban was the first to congratulate the EU leaders: “Good morning Hungary! On the way to a beautiful victory,” Orban wrote alongside pictures of Hungarian and US flags.
Türkiye – Hope for “strengthened relationship”
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan also emphasized his closeness to his “friend” Donald Trump. Erdogan was hopeful “that relations between Turkey and the USA will be strengthened.” He also hopes for a solution to the “Palestinian question” and an end to the war between Russia and Ukraine.
EU Commission – “strong transatlantic Agenda”
The European Union has been preparing for Trump’s second term in office for months – especially with a view to possible additional tariffs. EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen accordingly focused on future cooperation.
“The EU and the USA are more than just allies,” she wrote on X. There is a real partnership between both sides in which 800 million people are united. “So let’s work together on a strong transatlantic agenda.”
NATO – “Peace through Strength”
The USA’s NATO partners have also prepared. Secretary General Mark Rutte emphasized the prospect of future cooperation when congratulating Trump. His leadership will once again be crucial to maintaining the strength of the transatlantic defense alliance, the Dutchman said on X. “I look forward to working with him again to advance peace through strength through NATO.”
Trump had threatened NATO allies with the end of the assistance pact against Russia if they did not increase their defense spending.
Israel – “Renewal of the Grand Alliance”
The US election was followed with great excitement, especially in Israel. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu euphorically described Trump’s victory on X as the “greatest comeback” in history. The election success offers “a new beginning for America and a powerful renewal of commitment to the great alliance between Israel and America.”
Trump is considered a staunch supporter of Israel; he had accused current US President Joe Biden of not supporting Israel enough in the war with the militant Islamist Hamas. Trump promised during the election campaign that he would end the Middle East war within hours if he became president.
Qatar and Egypt – “Security and Stability”
The two Middle East mediators Qatar and Egypt also commented. The Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, stressed his hope to “work together again to strengthen security and stability in the region and worldwide.”
Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi expressed hope for “peace and stability” in the region after Trump’s election victory. Qatar and Egypt, together with the USA, are mediating between Israel and the militant Islamist Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
Ukraine – Hope for a “just peace”
The election campaign was also closely followed in Ukraine. Since the beginning of the major Russian invasion, the country has received extensive military, financial and political support from the USA. Trump could now stop the aid and force Ukraine to conclude an agreement for a supposed peace.
President Volodymyr Zelensky conveyed his congratulations to Trump and spoke of an “impressive” victory. Zelenskyj wrote on
Russia – “Trump is a businessman through and through”
So far there has been no reaction from President Vladimir Putin from Russia. However, Dmitry Medvedev, a close ally of Putin, spoke out. He describes Trump’s victory as a setback for Ukraine and good news for Russia. “Trump has a useful trait for us: he is a businessman through and through and he deeply hates spending his money on various entourages and stupid fellow travelers, on bad charities and on greedy international organizations,” wrote the deputy head of the Russian Security Council on Telegram.
The leadership of Ukraine falls into the category of people on whom Trump probably doesn’t want to spend too much money. However, it is unclear to what extent Trump will be able to cut US funding. “He is stubborn, but the system is stronger,” Medvedev wrote.
China – continued “consistent policy”
In an initial reaction, the Chinese leadership emphasized that it would continue to work with the US on the basis of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and mutually beneficial cooperation. “Our policy towards the USA is consistent,” said a Foreign Ministry spokeswoman.
China sells more than $400 billion worth of goods to the United States annually and hundreds of billions more in components for products Americans buy elsewhere.
