Congress, major voters… Understanding the presidential election in four infographics

“It’s still very red,” said our colleague upon arriving early this Wednesday morning at the editorial office. Red, yes, the color which represents the Trump camp on all the maps illustrating the 2024 American presidential election. Having come to party, the supporters of Kamala Harris left with a lump in their stomachs, anxiety having taken over in the middle of the night in Washington.

When they arrived, they barely dared to contemplate defeat and impatiently awaited the Democratic vice-president who was to speak before them. A speech finally canceled after half past midnight. In a long speech, Donald Trump claimed “a political victory never seen before” in the United States. “We wrote history,” Donald Trump also proclaimed to his supporters, promising to help the “country heal.”

A look back at a ballot in four infographics, based on data from the American media at 7:18 a.m. this Wednesday morning.

The results according to the States

In his duel against Kamala Harris, Donald Trump is therefore more than well placed, after winning three decisive states. The Republican candidate was given the victory in Georgia, North Carolina and especially in Pennsylvania, the most crucial of the seven “swing states”.

In the States which have already delivered their final results, no surprises. The two candidates won the series of states that were promised to them: Texas, Kentucky, West Virginia, Florida, Missouri, Oklahoma, Mississippi and Louisiana for the former Republican president. New York, Illinois, California, Massachusetts, Colorado and the capital Washington for the Democratic vice president.

Update on the major voters

For the moment, Donald Trump is in the lead with 266 voters, compared to 205 for Kamala Harris. He needs 270 to win. Preliminary trends, however, show Donald Trump well on his way to winning others, even if the count is still in progress. Another unknown: will he win the majority of votes nationally, something a Republican candidate has never done in twenty years?

Here are the states already won by the two American presidential candidates. In parentheses is the number of electoral votes won by each candidate, in total and by state.

Pour Donald Trump : Alabama (9), Arkansas (6), South Carolina (9), North Carolina (16), North Dakota (3), South Dakota (3), Florida (30), Georgia (16), Idaho ( 4), Indiana (11), Iowa (6), Kansas (6), Kentucky (8), Louisiana (8), Missouri (10), Mississippi (6), Montana (4), Nebraska (4 of 5), Ohio (17), Oklahoma (7), Pennsylvania (19), Tennessee (11), Texas (40), Utah (6), West Virginia (4), Wyoming (3).

For Kamala Harris: California (54), Colorado (10), Connecticut (7), Delaware (3), Hawaii (4), Illinois (19), Maryland (10), Massachusetts (11), New York (28), New Mexico ( 5), Nebraska (1 of 5), Oregon (8), Rhode Island (4), Vermont (3), Virginia (13), Washington DC (3), Washington State (12)

Update on the Senate

The US Senate has 100 seats – two per state – and 34 of them were up for vote during the November 5 election. The Democrats had the arduous task of having to defend two-thirds, a real challenge given their narrow majority of 51 seats to 49. And it was the Republicans who regained control of the Senate, a crucial organ of federal power. This shift was made possible thanks to two electoral successes, in West Virginia and Ohio.

Note that for the first time in its 235 years of existence, the Senate will include two black women: Angela Alsobrooks and Lisa Blunt Rochester, two Democrats, will represent Maryland and Delaware respectively in this chamber dominated by men.

Congress Update

This victory in the Senate allows Donald Trump's party to dominate at least one of the two chambers of Congress. This upper house votes on federal laws, just like the House of Representatives, but also has very important exclusive powers, notably in the appointment or dismissal of key figures in the executive, or even in the confirmation of federal magistrates.

The second chamber, i.e. the 435 seats of the House of Representatives, was also up for renewal on November 5, but the count could take days. It is therefore still in play, with neither party seeming to have a decisive advantage.
