He is one of the well-known figures of Antibes who has just passed away, at the age of 73, following a long illness. Gilbert Castello is the story of FC Antibes, AS Fontonne football and the city’s sports department. Married to Brigitte, they had two children Perrine and Stéphane, who gave them five grandchildren Marie, Clara, Chloé, Elisa and Sacha.
Gilbert started football at Cavigal in Nice before continuing at OGC Nice in the youth categories. Recruited at FC Antibes, he spent his entire career there despite a trial, thanks to Laurent Robuschi, at FC Girondins de Bordeaux, where he shared his room with Philippe Bergeroo.
Funeral Friday
After the FCA adventure, Gilbert joined the neighboring club AS Fontonne to train young people and then seniors while playing as veterans. He will end his coaching career at US Biot.
On the professional side, Gilbert Castello returned to the town hall of Antibes, to public lighting, then to the nautical stadium. He had been retired for several years.
He also participated in the beginnings of the Pool Area as a sound manager, during the heyday of OAJLP basketball, then coached by Jacques Monclar.
His funeral will take place on Friday at 11 a.m. at Antibes Cathedral.
