Republican Donald Trump announced his victory in the presidential elections in the United States of America, and said that he expected to obtain more than 300 Electoral College votes.
Trump said in a speech from his campaign headquarters in Florida, “I achieved a historic victory. We won in the swing states and in the popular vote, and we achieved 315 votes. This is a wonderful feeling that indicates the love of the people.”
He added in front of a crowd of his supporters, “God saved me to save the country. This is a political victory the likes of which our country has never seen before. My victory is historic political consensus, and we thank the American people for this honor in electing me as president again. Today is a victory for democracy. We have made history and overcome many obstacles.”
Trump touched on his pledges after his election, and said, “I will make America great again. We want a strong army. I will not start wars, but I will end them. I will provide job opportunities. We will reduce taxes and close the borders to criminals.”
Voters primarily concerned with the economy voted overwhelmingly in favor of Trump, especially in light of a feeling that their economic conditions were worse than they were four years ago.
About 31% of voters said that the economy is their main issue, and about 45% of voters across the country said that their family’s financial situation is worse today than it was 4 years ago.
Trump confirmed that the Republican Party took control of both chambers of Congress after regaining the majority in the Senate.
Results details
The partial results of the elections showed Trump leading with 267 votes in the electoral college, compared to 224 votes for his Democratic rival, Kamala Harris.
Trump showed a strong performance in a wide sector of the country, and is close to obtaining the 270 electoral college votes required to secure victory and return to the White House again.
After the Republican candidate won the swing states of North Carolina and Georgia, Harris’ remaining hope is to win the states of Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, but the latest data indicate that she is lagging behind her competitor in the three states.
Kamala Harris’ campaign manager, Jane Malley Dillon, confirmed that the “clearest path to victory” passes through the three of the seven swing states that usually decide the results of the presidential elections.
“It is an extremely tight race,” Dillon wrote in a letter to the campaign teams, seen by Agence France-Presse. “We have always known that our clearest path to obtaining the votes of 270 large voters passes through the blue wall states. We are happy with what we see.”
The “Blue Wall”, in the color of the Democratic Party, consists of Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania, located in the northeast of the country and the Great Lakes region.
