Donald Trump wins a first key state, Kamala Harris in difficulty – L'Express

Who will win, Donald Trump or Kamala Harris? If results have started to fall for the first States, the wait could be as long as it is feverish. As the map of the country turns red, the color of the Republicans, and blue, that of the Democrats, no one knows whether it will be hours or days before the media attributes the final victory to Kamala Harris, who would be the first woman elected to this position, or to Donald Trump, who never admitted his defeat in 2020.

To win, a candidate must obtain at least 270 electors. After a campaign punctuated by dramatic events, including two assassination attempts targeting Donald Trump, L'Express follows this American night for you.

Information to remember:

⇒ The results in the different States are falling little by little, without surprise for the moment

⇒ Winner in a first key state, Donald Trump is in the lead

⇒ The Republican denounced “massive cheating” in Pennsylvania, without providing evidence

Trump wins key state of North Carolina, first setback for Harris

Donald Trump won his first major victory in the race for the White House by winning the key state of North Carolina, which he had conquered in 2016 and 2020 but which was highly coveted by his rival Kamala Harris, according to the media NBC, ABC and CNN. Two more states for Kamala Harris

The Democrat is given the victory in the state of Washington (12 electors) and in Connecticut (7 electors). This therefore gives him 172 electors in total, out of the 270 necessary to win the election.

Why do so many people still support Donald Trump?

Despite the scandals and ever more outrageous outings, the Republican candidate still appeals to many Americans. A surreal situation in the eyes of his opponents. But not necessarily irrational, as explained in this article by our journalist Laurent Berbon to read here.

Republicans flip Senate seat in Ohio

Republican Bernie Moreno won a senatorial election in Ohio, according to Fox News and NBC News, flipping a previously Democratic seat, a gain of importance for the camp of Donald Trump, who wants to regain the majority in the Senate . After a particularly close race, Bernie Moreno, a 57-year-old former car dealer born in Colombia, narrowly beat Democrat Sherrod Brown, who has been in office since 2007.

As a reminder, if the fierce battle between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris for the White House eclipses all other elections, other decisive votes are currently being held across the Atlantic.

Oregon for Kamala Harris

Following on from the previous results, the vice-president also won Oregon: that's 8 more electors for the Democrat, who now has 153.

Kamala Harris wins California, Donald Trump wins Idaho and Iowa

Kamala Harris won, again unsurprisingly, California and its 54 electors, while Donald Trump won in two other states, Idaho and Iowa, according to American media projections. These new victories bring the total of electors to 211 for the former Republican president and 145 for the Democratic vice-president. It takes 270 to win the US presidential election.

A few days ago, a poll in Iowa created a surprise by giving Kamala Harris a lead in this traditionally Republican state. But the Democrats will obviously not have conquered this opposing bastion.

No surprises so far

No drama for the moment. The states won so far by the two candidates, according to the media, were promised to them: Texas, Kentucky, West Virginia, Florida, Missouri, Oklahoma, Mississippi or even Louisiana for the former Republican president. New York, Illinois, Vermont, Massachusetts, Colorado and the capital Washington for the Democratic vice-president. The suspense remains in all the “swing states”, these states likely to change the result of the election.

A black elected official supported by Trump fails to become governor of North Carolina

A Republican elected official from North Carolina supported by Donald Trump and whose campaign was marked by numerous scandals failed on Tuesday to become the first black governor of this southeastern state, according to American media projections. Mark Robinson, outgoing deputy governor who had the support of the former Republican president in this hotly contested state, lost to Democratic Attorney General Josh Stein, who will succeed outgoing governor, also Democrat, Roy Cooper, NBC channels report News and ABC News.

Mark Robinson had been in turmoil since CNN attributed to him in September pseudonymous messages on a pornographic site, dating from 2008 to 2012, in which he allegedly denied the Holocaust, praised Hitler or vilified Martin Luther King. According to CNN, he also claimed to be a “black Nazi” at the time and advocated the reestablishment of slavery in this part of the United States so marked by this violent history.

What would happen in the event of a tie?

What if Kamala Harris and Donald Trump each failed to reach the necessary majority of voters to win the White House? This completely crazy scenario is theoretically possible.

Here is a video of what the constitution provides:

Donald Trump in the lead, a “mirage”?

For the moment, Donald Trump is ahead of his rival Kamala Harris, with 20 states won for 168 voters. But this lead does not mean that he will necessarily win, as our journalist Paul Véronique explains in this article.

The United States on alert in the face of threats targeting the elections

False bomb threats attributed to Russian destabilization operations targeted polling stations in several states, notably briefly disrupting the vote in Georgia (southeast), one of those where the election is being played out, authorities announced . The FBI, the American federal police, indicated in a press release “that it is aware of bomb threats at polling stations in several states, several of which appear to emanate from Russian internet domain names”. “None of these threats have so far been considered credible,” underlines the FBI without specifying the states concerned and calling on the population to report any suspicious activity to law enforcement.

The head of elections in Georgia, Brad Raffensperger, for his part affirmed that the source of the false bomb threats in his state “had been identified and it was Russia”. Local authorities in Fulton and DeKalb counties, around Atlanta, Georgia's main city, reported five office closures in each. Bomb threats also targeted polling stations and municipal buildings in the key state of Pennsylvania (north-east) in the evening, without immediate consequences, according to authorities cited by the media.

While saying she is aware of her image as a pioneer, the candidate recently told CBS that her priorities in Congress would mainly be the subjects of the cost of childcare, housing, health and even the right to 'abortion. The rights of transgender people were among the hot topics of this American presidential and legislative election campaign.
