Chief Deputy City Attorney Heather Ferbert has a strong lead lead against Assm. Brian Maienschein for San Diego City Attorney in the race to replace Mara Elliott, who has termed out.
HEATHER FERBERT | 157,837 | 56.06% |
BRIAN MAIENSCHEIN | 123,721 | 43.94% |
Ferbert has the endorsement of Elliott, who called Ferbert “the most qualified candidate for city attorney.” Ferbert has also been endorsed by the Deputy City Attorneys Association of San Diego and multiple past presidents of the San Diego County Bar Association.
Much of Ferbert’s campaign materials have focused on her experience in the City Attorney’s Office and her qualifications as an attorney.
Maienschein was a registered Republican until 2019, when he switched to the Democratic Party as a protest against Donald Trump. He is a licensed attorney who teaches law at the University of San Diego, but most of his relevant experience has been political rather than legal. He previously served two terms on the San Diego City Council and served as the city’s commissioner on homelessness. He has spent more than a decade in the state assembly, where he currently serves in North County’s 76th assembly district.
Maienschein has been endorsed by the San Diego Police Officers Association, the San Diego County Democratic Party and a host of other elected officials, including Mayor Todd Gloria and the majority of the San Diego City Council.
