Polls have closed in three additional states at 7:30 p.m. EST, including Ohio with its 17 electoral votes, North Carolina with 16, and West Virginia with 4.
Donald Trump has won West Virginia’s four electoral votes, maintaining Republican dominance in a state that has backed him for three consecutive presidential elections, the Associated Press reports.
The victory was declared at 7:30 p.m. EST in a state where Trump had previously achieved the rare distinction of winning every county in both 2016 and 2020.
West Virginia’s electoral vote count has decreased by one since the last presidential election due to population losses recorded in the 2020 census.
The state has remained firmly in Republican hands since Bill Clinton’s 1996 victory, the last time a Democratic presidential candidate prevailed there.
The GOP currently holds all elected partisan statewide offices in West Virginia.
This marks the conclusion of voting in two crucial battleground states – North Carolina and Georgia (16 electoral votes) – that could prove decisive in determining the next president.
Earlier, polls closed at 7:00 p.m. EST in several states, with Trump securing victories in Indiana (11 electoral votes) and Kentucky (eight), whilst Harris claimed Vermont (three).
Results are still awaited from South Carolina (nine) and Virginia (13).
The emerging results from Georgia and North Carolina, both considered key swing states, will be closely watched as early indicators of the national outcome.
