The highest-paid player at AC Milan, Rafael Leão has found himself on the bench for three consecutive matches under manager Paulo Fonseca.

On the third matchday of Serie A, last day of August, Milan faced Lazio. Leão, born in Almada, Portugal in 1999, began the game among the substitutes. Introduced into the fray in the 70th minute with his team trailing 2-1, he equalized just two minutes later. During the hydration break, Fonseca summoned his players to issue tactical instructions. However, Leão and fellow substitute Theo Hernández ignored their coach and kept their distance. This duo, once instrumental in creating a lethal left flank during Stefano Pioli’s tenure that led Milan to the Scudetto in 2022, were perceived to be in defiance against Fonseca, with this act of rebellion garnering significant media attention across Italy.

Leão has faced scrutiny for his dip in form. Over the past three seasons, he has consistently registered over ten goals and ten assists. This season, however, he has managed just one goal and four assists. A year ago, he extended his contract with the club until 2028, becoming the highest earner in the squad. He pockets a net salary of seven million euros per year, plus an additional two million in variables over five years. Despite being benched for three consecutive Serie A matches, he has remained a starter in the Champions League. With the upcoming clash at the Bernabéu, many are keen to see if the unpredictable Leão will make his presence felt once again.
