Apple has always reserved the best screens for the Pro models. If previously you had to pay a high price to be entitled to a 120 Hz screen, this time all iPhone 17 models will be on an equal footing.
According to several corroborating sources, all iPhone 17 models will be equipped with 120 Hz ProMotion screens, a feature previously reserved for Pro versions. This information, reported in particular by ETNews, but which had already been revealed by leaker Ross Young several years ago, marks a significant turning point in the strategy of the Cupertino giant.
Since the iPhone 13 Pro, Apple has maintained a clear distinction between its models: the Pro versions benefit from 120 Hz screens, while standard models remain limited to 60 Hz. This policy has regularly been the subject of criticism, especially since many Android smartphones, even entry-level ones, already offer high refresh rates.
The iPhone 17s will all have a 120 Hz screen
LTPO technology, at the heart of this development, will allow future iPhones to dynamically adjust their refresh rate. Unlike traditional displays that alternate between fixed values, this technology can go down to 1 Hz, optimizing power consumption while providing a smoother visual experience.
South Korean giants Samsung Display and LG Display would be the suppliers chosen for these new screens. This information is all the more credible as it has been corroborated by several sources, including the renowned analyst Ross Young and the Korean media The Elec.
A major change will also concern the range: the iPhone 17 Plus would give way to a new model called iPhone 17 Air. This thinner version would also benefit from the 120 Hz ProMotion screen, further widening the gap with the future iPhone SE 4, which would retain a 60 Hz display.
After years of fairly timid developments, the firm therefore seems ready to propose more substantial improvements. Users will thus be able to benefit from smoother animations, better in-game responsiveness and greater energy optimization thanks to LTPO technology.
If these rumors are confirmed, 2025 could mark a significant turning point for Apple, who would finally catch up with the competition in terms of refresh rate, even on its non-Pro models.
