Gender reassignment measures for minors are increasing. The Swiss trans woman Nadia Brönimann is now campaigning against it.
The most important thing in brief
- More and more minors are receiving gender reassignment treatment in Switzerland.
- The Swiss Nadia Brönimann is trans herself, but criticizes the trend.
- She wants to ban hormone therapy and operations on minors.

The number of gender reassignment surgeries carried out in Switzerland is increasing. And not just in adults, but also in patients under 18 years of age. In 2019, 15 minors had a masectomy, i.e. the removal of their breasts. In 2022 there were already 24 operations.
As “Blick” reports, not everyone approves of this trend – including Nadia Brönimann, the most famous Swiss trans woman. Despite her transition 26 years ago, she is campaigning against the implementation of this transition – especially among minors. She is scheduled to give a speech on November 7th before the Grand Council of the Human Rights Commission in Geneva.
“Gender reassignment degenerates into a woke lifestyle”
Brönimann believes that minors should be protected from undergoing gender reassignment therapy or surgery. The risk that the transition will be made with the wrong motivation is too great.
Because during puberty you are exposed to a variety of feelings anyway. Added to this are the social media algorithms, which always show you confirming content – also for self-diagnosis of being trans. “Gender adjustments degenerate into a woke lifestyle,” says Brönimann to “Blick”. She knows that this sentence will trigger a “huge shitstorm,” but she stands by it.

“Nobody is born in the wrong body,” Brönimann continues. Instead, it is family, upbringing, the environment, encounters and experiences that shape us.
Puberty blockers without parental permission are “irresponsible”
There is also far too little talk about the possible consequences of such measures. For example, physical complaints or the lifelong use of medication. “Teenagers cannot yet understand the complexity and significance of a transition in this phase,” says Brönimann.
But once a teenager has decided that they are trans, not much stands in the way. From the age of 14 onwards, hormones and puberty blockers can be prescribed in Switzerland without parental permission, says Brönimann.
“I find that irresponsible,” Brönimann continued. It is absurd that “such a medically and psychologically far-reaching gender reassignment step” could take place without parental approval.
Too little clarification and medical measures taken too quickly
Brönimann denounces the system in Switzerland “in which young people’s self-diagnosis is exclusively and unreflectively affirmed.” There is a lack of “a thorough medical, mental and emotional evaluation.”
Have you ever questioned your gender?
Psychotherapy is planned for young people who suspect that they are trans. However, this is only carried out insufficiently. Instead, medical measures are quickly advised.
Brönimann makes himself an enemy
Brönimann doesn’t just make friends with her opinion. “For activists within the trans community, I am an enemy and am insulted as transphobic,” she told “Blick”.
But she doesn’t let that stop her. “I am committed to an issue that is of enormous importance and urgency,” says Brönimann.
From “Nadia” back to “Chris”
Brönimann came out some time ago to not only identify as a woman. She is currently in detransition. This means that she is becoming more like the male gender again.
She regrets having gender reassignment surgery. “Nadia” has become more and more of a role for her. «Now I’m giving Chris more and more space. I don’t yet know where my journey will lead,” says Brönimann.
