Célia Gery has become European cyclo-cross champion among the promising women. The Frenchwoman was able to withstand a scorching pace from Marie Schreiber throughout the cross, who had to be satisfied with silver in the sprint. Leonie Bentveld fell just short and finished third.
After two very interesting junior competitions, the promising women were looking forward to the ladies who were already competing in the elite. In contrast to the first races of the day, there was not a large peloton for long. Schreiber opened on behalf of Luxembourg with a blistering pace. This could only be followed in the first round by Gery (France) and the Dutch hope Bentveld. The Czech Kristyna Zemanová followed on the elastic.
Schreiber pounded hard in the first two rounds, meaning Zemanová was never able to really connect. The large peloton of chasers followed within a minute. The elastic at number four in the race eventually broke after three rounds. The medal candidates seemed to be known halfway through the cross, but in what order?
Schreiber’s pace slowed towards the final. Bentveld had to leave a gap in lap four, but with two laps to go she was still able to join when she crossed the line. So at the limit, because in the penultimate round Bentveld dropped out again and Gery could only keep up. All hands on deck for the final lap, with Schreiber not losing the lead for a second. Gery, however, stuck to her wheel and was more explosive in the sprint. Bentveld came third.
