RB Leipzig loses in Dortmund: Coach Rose knows the reasons

After 19 Bundesliga games across the season without defeat, RB Leipzig got hit again this Saturday – deservedly, as coach Marco Rose also had to admit. From his point of view, there was a lack of maturity.

What was RB Leipzig missing in the 1-2 defeat in Dortmund despite an initial 1-0 lead? Marco Rose knew the answer: “A good performance.”

The Leipzig coach, who worked for BVB between 2021 and 2022, spoke in Sky-Interview don’t even beat around the bush. He himself had recognized that his team was not developing enough offensive threat against Borussia, who had been stumbling recently, that they were not able to capitalize on the 1-0 goal they had achieved early on with their first goal, and that they saw little ground with the black and yellow team.

Rose: “They were better than us in many respects. They were more physical, better on the ball and made better decisions. If you put all the points together, the performance seems more passionate, although I don’t want to deny my team’s will at all.” But, his simple conclusion: “Borussia Dortmund was simply the better team.”

Goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi, who had prevented further goals from being conceded with a few top saves, couldn’t disagree with that: “That just wasn’t good, although more could certainly have been possible. But it was up to us, especially because you were 1-0 in “We’re in the lead and the opponent doesn’t actually have much tailwind.” BVB had ultimately suffered three defeats in a row, including the exhausting DFB Cup exit in Wolfsburg on Wednesday (0-1 n.V.).

In the end, it “killed Leipzig that we had so many simple mistakes and ball losses. We also made too many bad decisions while in possession of the ball or after winning the ball. That wasn’t enough.”

“In the end, you don’t deserve anything.”

Willi Orban also agreed with the previous speaker: “We were actually in a good mood. But we didn’t come close to our top performance in all areas. Tactically, technically too unclean, lost a lot of balls. In the end, you didn’t deserve anything here.” And especially in combination with the passion shown by the Dortmund team, there wasn’t enough to be achieved, “which is of course disappointing.” Precisely because it was the first Bundesliga defeat after 19 games (1:2 in Munich at the end of February 2024) and the associated loss of contact with league leaders Bayern, who were recently tied on points.

Rose didn’t want to be harsh on his team, which also had to cope with some personnel losses. Especially since, in his view, the defeat could be attributed to a lack of maturity on the part of some of his protégés: “We are all footballers and people. We have big plans and came here with a good feeling. It was the 100th time I was on the line and in games like this “Where we can set ourselves apart and get a statement victory, we are caught up in the fact that here and there we lack the courage and the conviction.”

Because, Rose continued, referring to players like the 19-year-old Arthur Vermeeren and Antonio Nusa: “We are still a young team in some areas.” That cannot outweigh the experience of leaders like Gulacsi or Orban. “We have several boys who are playing their first Bundesliga season. That’s why we see again and again that we still have to learn something new.”
