Wolves were held to an entertaining 2-2 draw against Crystal Palace in the Premier League as supporters walked away from Molineux feeling disappointed once more.
As has been the tale for Wolves this season, Gary O’Neil’s men were disappointing in the first half, with Crystal Palace creating countless opportunities to score.
The hosts were then left fearing the worst after Trevoh Chalobah scored in the 60th minute to put the Eagles in front.
This prompted O’Neil to make a triple substitution, with Goncalo Guedes one of the players to make an impact on the game after Pablo Sarabia missed two golden chances to score.
Wolves equalised through Jorgen Strand Larsen after a terrific touch and pass from Matheus Cunha, with the Brazilian driving his team forward in the match.
His piercing run helped create the second goal, as Guedes cut the ball back to Joao Gomes, who swept the ball superbly past Dean Henderson.
Wolves joy was short-lived, though, as Marc Guehi equalised moments later in what proved to be the final goal of an entertaining second half.
Wolves equal unwanted 41-year record vs Crystal Palace
Wolves showed great fight to turn the game around after going behind but it ultimately wasn’t enough, as it’s now zero wins in 10 league matches this term.
With Southampton securing a vital three points against Everton and Ipswich drawing to Leicester, O’Neil’s men remain bottom of the table, four points adrift of safety.
Perhaps more alarmingly, failure to win at home to Palace saw them equal a 41-year record, as that was the last time they went their first 10 matches of the season without winning, per BBC Match of the Day.
That is a dreadful record to have and if things don’t change very soon, especially at home to Southampton next weekend, then surely O’Neil will lose his job.
Wolves vs Southampton should define Gary O’Neil’s future
Providing he doesn’t get sacked in the build-up to their fixture against the Saints, next Saturday could decide whether he loses his job or lives to survive another day.
O’Neil said that the fixtures against Palace and Southampton aren’t must-win, which is complete nonsense, and the Wanderers now find themselves four points adrift.
It would be a travesty if Russell Martin’s men came to Molineux and nicked a point or all three and after their confidence-boosting win over Everton, perhaps the supporters are now fearing the worst.
Ultimately, one win in 20 is not good enough at all and he can count himself lucky to still be in a job after that run.
However, next weekend could be the final nail in the coffin for him if their winless run this term is extended to 11 matches.
