A tourist hotspot in Italy is being restored. In order not to disappoint tourists, they got creative. This leads to malice and ridicule from locals.
Rome – The excitement in Italy’s capital Rome is once again great. Once again the background is a cultural monument of the city. This time, however, as in many other cases, tourists are not attracting the ridicule of locals. Rather, an action by the city itself is causing heads to shake and incredulous comments.

Mockery in Italy: Change to tourist magnet a “crazy joke” for many
Rome has been wanting to give itself a new coat of paint for several months and is heavily renovating the city center, which is popular with tourists. The resulting barriers and scaffolding in front of world-famous buildings caused regret throughout the summer among tourists, some of whom had traveled long distances to Italy’s capital. As part of these renovations, it was also the turn of the famous Trevi Fountain in the heart of Rome.

The fountain is a real magnet for locals and tourists alike and millions of people are only too happy to throw change into the fountain. According to legend, this is supposed to bring good luck. But without water in the fountain, there would be no donations – and on top of that, disappointed holidaymakers who would have to return home without the pinch of happiness from the Trevi Fountain. That’s why the city of Rome came up with a creative idea: they quickly placed a small rectangular water basin in front of the fountain.

This is causing people to shake their heads in Italy. A photo of the pool in front of the empty Trevi Fountain is currently going viral on the Internet. “We make the world laugh,” one user commented on the picture. “The paddling pool beats them all,” says another. But the malice is not only directed against the city of Rome and the strange idea. The tourists who willingly throw money into the artificial Trevi replacement are also ridiculed: “The measure of the idiocy of the average tourist,” goes one comment. (rist)
