Dominic Calvert-Lewin was a huge disappointment as Everton lost 1-0 to Southampton at St Mary’s Stadium on Saturday.

With the Saints still bottom of the Premier League table after their first nine matches of the season, the Toffees were expected to secure all three points on 2 November.

However, a late goal from Adam Armstrong claimed all three points for the relegation-threatened side just moments after Beto smashed the crossbar, then having an equaliser ruled out for offside.

Jordan Pickford – 7

Little for Pickford to do. Southampton dominated possession but the game lacked quality in general, leaving both goalkeepers with an easy job for the afternoon. Could do nothing about the Saints’ winner.

Ashley Young – 8

Easily one of his strongest performances so far this season, keeping the Saints attack relatively quiet down his side, remaining disciplined and also creating chances in the final third. He was everywhere.

James Tarkowski – 5

Was handed an early yellow card at St Mary’s Stadium, rightly punished for an unneeded challenge on Cameron Archer, who proved to be a nuisance for the backline all day.

Michael Keane – 6

Made the right decision to bring down Cameron Archer, who could have been bearing down on goal without the crucial intervention from the centre-back. Picked up the pieces behind Tarkowski. Came incredibly close to scoring.

Vitaliy Mykolenko – 6

A solid display from the Ukrainian. Much like his full-back teammate, Mykolenko was quick to win the ball back and send the Toffees on their way, though he was nearly as influential in the attacking third.

Orel Mangala – 5

Had a strike well saved from outside the box. Popped up in some key areas but did nothing to light the game up. Looks to be creating a decent partnership with Idrissa Gueye in the middle of the park.

Idrissa Gueye – 7

One of the Toffees’ best players on the day, flying into tackles and winning the ball back but was unable to influence the play in general due to Southampton’s dominance in possession.

Jesper Lindstrom – 6

Used brilliant trickery to cause problems down the right flank for much of the match but was unable to find the final touch in front of goal despite creating chances.

Dwight McNeil – 4

Continued to get on the ball and push his team up the field, but was far too slow and lazy on the ball when it mattered most, squandering chances to notch an assist or strike at Aaron Ramsdale in the Saints net.

Iliman Ndiaye (Off for Harrison 61′) – 5

Far from what fans have become used to from their star winger. With the Saints keeping the ball, he barely saw the ball and was squeezed out of the game on the left flank.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin (Off for Beto 61′) – 2

Has been largely ineffective in the final third, struggling to get involved with any of his teammates. A far cry from the figure who kicked off the season, netting against Bournemouth and Aston Villa.

Substitutes

Beto (On for Calvert-Lewin 61′) – 7

Clearly still thriving off the equaliser against Fulham, Beto was an absolute nuisance against a tired Saints defence. Rotten luck not to score before the Saints’ winner and had another effort disallowed.

Jack Harrison (On for Ndiaye 61′) – 4

Did not have the intended impact after replacing Ndiaye on the hour-mark, wasting any chances that came to him and shooting from distance.

Jarrad Branthwaite (On for Lindstrom 88′) – N/A
