After the arrest of four minors for acts of violence committed during Halloween evening the day before, several arsons broke out in a district of Rillieux-la-Pape this Friday, November 1, prompting the prefecture to deploy the CRS.
The day after a second restless night, the Lyon political world deplores the new incidents that occurred in Rillieux-la-Pape this Friday, November 1st. According to information from BFM Lyon, two buses were blocked and then set on fire by around twenty people in the Velette district from 9 p.m.
The individuals used the contents of glass containers as projectiles against the police, injuring one of them in the head. “These people could have caused the city to experience tragedy. Nothing justified this violence,” reacted Alexandre Vincendet, the mayor of the town (Horizons) on BFMTV.
The day before, Halloween evening had already been marked by the arrest of four minors aged 13 to 17, having burned several cars and trash cans before being guilty of mortar fire and theft, according to a press release from the city hall. Their police custody was extended.
“These are reprisals linked to the arrests,” Alexandre Vincendet explained to BFM Lyon. “They want to put pressure on us, to leave them alone, but that’s out of the question. It’s unacceptable for a minority to push a neighborhood to the limit.”
The councilor announced that he was going to “summon the parents” of the four arrested on Thursday – “very unfavorably known to the police, particularly for drug trafficking” – during a Council of Family Rights and Duties next week .
“It's a very simple contract: either they help us get their children back on the right path, or they refuse and we will suspend municipal aid. You cannot benefit from national solidarity if you ruin everyone's life a neighborhood,” he explained.
The town hall threatens to put pressure on landlords
The city also wishes to organize a meeting with residents of the Velette district, the Rhône prefecture, landlords and all stakeholders concerned in order to “resolve the problems”.
“If they are residents of Rillieux, I will do everything to ensure that their leases are broken, added the mayor. It is up to the thugs to leave, not the honest people who are afraid,” said the mayor.
On Friday evening, residents of an adjoining building evacuated the premises, fearing that the flames would spread from the vehicles to their homes.
“We must make parents responsible and make young people aware of what they risk if they take the path of delinquency. We need dissuasive prevention,” added Abel Boyi, educator and president of the association “Tous unique, tous united” on BFMTV.
The delegated prefect for defense and security, Juliette Bossart-Trignat, also visited the site this Friday.
“The State will react firmly”
This second “malicious act” was described as a “major disruption” by the TCL network on its website, with line 33 being temporarily stopped in the area and not resuming until this Sunday.
“I'm going to go to work with it, that's how it is… This has happened several times in the neighborhood,” regretted this Saturday a local resident, whose rear of the car was hit by the fire.
“The State will act firmly,” assured the Rhône prefecture on its X account. “Investigations are underway to find the perpetrators who will have to answer for their actions.” The CRS will remain mobilized all weekend in Rillieux-la-Pape alongside national and municipal police personnel.
