The state in which the sovereign appeared revives speculation about his state of health and his ability to continue to truly rule Morocco.
Le roi Mohammed VI is seriously ill. And the state in which he appeared this Monday, October 28 revives speculation about his state of health and his ability to continue to really lead the Morocco.
By welcoming Emmanuel Macron at Rabat airport, the sovereign aged only 61, very emaciated and unrecognizable, had to lean on a cane to walk the few dozen meters of the red carpet laid out for the occasion.

If his illness and the deterioration of his health were not a secret, it was the first time that he appeared in public in such a state.
“A muscle contracture in the back due to sciatica”
According to the Moroccan news site Le360known to be close to the power in place, “the Sovereign endures the after-effects of a muscular contracture in the back due to sciatica which affects the way he stands and walks.”
“It is normal for such contracture to be felt when standing and walking”explains a doctor contacted by the same media who tries to reassure by indicating that, “after a period of convalescence, the symptoms described disappear naturally”. However, these explanations would not convince many people in Morocco.
According to The ConfidentialMohammed VI would in reality suffer from Hashimoto’s disease, an autoimmune disease that can cause hypothyroidism. He also suffers from chronic pulmonary obstruction which worsened last year. The sovereign was also operated on for a cardiac arrhythmia, in Paris in 2018 then in Rabat in 2020.
