Borussia Dortmund lost their third competitive game in a row with a 0-1 defeat after extra time in the second round of the DFB Cup at VfL Wolfsburg. The decision in favor of Lower Saxony was only made deep into extra time.
VfL coach Ralph Hasenhüttl made four changes after the 0-0 draw against FC St. Pauli: Instead of Özcan, Gerhardt, Tiago Tomas and Wind (all bench), Arnold started (after a yellow card suspension in the league), Majer, Dardai ( Starting eleven debut in a competitive game) and Wimmer (red card suspension in the league).
Dortmund coach Nuri Sahin was forced to make injury-related changes compared to the 1-2 loss against FC Augsburg. Groß, Can and Beier started for Ryerson (adductors), Anton (hip) and Sabitzer (back problems, but sat on the bench). Due to the overall major personnel concerns, there were five players in the squad: Lührs, Mané, Azhil, Campbell and Paulina, who are otherwise mainly with third division club BVB II.
DFB Cup – 2nd round, Tuesday
Beier fails at the right post
Dortmund was a little more present in the opening phase, repeatedly played forward with enthusiasm and also had the first chances: Beier, who was cleared by Schlotterbeck, failed with the first big chance in front of the goal at the right post (14th). Shortly afterwards, a shot from Gittens was just blocked out of the goal (16′).
But the Lower Saxony team also got better into the game as the game went on and also created opportunities. Can deflected a shot from Wimmer just in time (20′). Kobel fended off a powerful attempt from Amoura (32′). Already in the final phase before the break, Majer slashed past the ball in a good position (43′), so that there was a fair draw at half time.
In extra time: Tiago Tomas hits the crossbar
After the break, Dortmund came out of the locker room with a little more vigor. Nevertheless, it took until the 65th minute before Guirassy had the first clear chance of the second half. Wolfsburg now found it more difficult to come up with clear finishing moves themselves; it was only in the final phase that Joker Wind had the clearest opportunity of the second half from the home team’s perspective (87th).
So the game went into overtime. And in this, VfL quickly had its best chance in the game to date: After a pass from Özcan, Tiago Tomas maneuvered the ball directly onto the top edge of the crossbar (93′). After aluminum hits it was now 1:1, but after goals it was still 0:0. With only his second substitution, Sahin brought on the ailing Sabitzer in the middle of the first half of extra time (99th) – otherwise the BVB coach only had inexperienced young talent at his disposal.
Wind ensures the late decision
It continued scoreless into the second half of extra time. And in this, Joker Wind became a decisive factor: Bensebaini initially prevented BVB from getting worse with his header against the Dane, but the striker made it better a little later. In the turmoil in the Dortmund penalty area, he transferred the ball from his right to his left foot and then shot his team into the round of 16 with the golden goal of the evening (117th).
